They can be found in parking lots of gas stations, shopping centers and grocery stores, just to name a few. BUT unattended donation bins aren't always what they seem. While the bin may prominently display a charity's name, often times they are operated by a for profit thrift entity or salvage dealer that gives the charity a miniscule portion of the proceeds. Before you donate to any charity, be sure to do your homework! Under New Jersey law, bins must be registered in the municipality where they are located and provide full disclosure in terms of what happens to the donations and how the charity benefits. A phone number for obtaining additional information must also be prominently displayed. There are also for profit salvage dealers that pay schools by the pound to conduct clothing drives. Items are then sold to Third World countries with the schools getting very little of the proceeds. For tax purposes, it is always best to donate to a charity that can provide you with a receipt.
Eleven veterans recently completed Goodwill's C-Tech Training Program at the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center. This group of veterans was the first to complete this intensive six week course, which covers everything from the introduction of telecommunications to the introduction of fiber-optic based systems. By successfully completing this course and then taking exams conducted by C-tech Associates, participants attain National Industry Recognized Certification. With this certification, they can secure positions as entry level technicians for companies that install phone systems and cable technicians in commercial and residential settings. Kudos to this hard working class!
